Dynamometer testing is an increasingly popular option at service and performance shops. Although there are several different types of dynos,..they are all just tools for the professional,. and as such,. require expertise and experience to be fully utilized. Only data from the same make and model dyno can be compared properly, .and then only if the operator has applied the proper correction factors accurately. This, and non-standardized oil temperatures,..is the biggest cause of widely varying test results. To de-bunk some popular myths: A dyno test is not nearly as hard on an engine as a full throttle run thru the gears. (TRUE) Dyno testing will NOT damage tires any more than normal use will. (TRUE) You cannot properly set ignition timing on an inertial type dynamometer.(TRUE) A dyno is a good substitute for road testing drivability. (FALSE) Peak horsepower on a dyno test is the best measure of performance. (FALSE)
